At just 12 years old, he witnessed unimaginable hardship when his family was taken hostage as ISIS swept through his hometown. Those early experiences could have defined his future—but instead, they became the foundation of his strength.
In 2018, Sulaiman arrived in Australia, determined to build a new life. He began as a translator, speaking Yazidi, Arabic, and English, helping others while finding his own path. But it was football that truly gave him a sense of freedom.
By 2020, he stepped onto the field not as a player, but as a referee—embracing the responsibility, discipline, and passion the role demands. Since then, he has continued to rise, earning multiple awards, including Best Referee honors and numerous “Player of the Match” recognitions from his earlier playing days.

Today, Sulaiman stands proudly in Sydney, participating in the 2026 CommBank Emerging Socceroos Championship—an event that brings together some of the most promising young talents in Australia. His journey reflects not only his personal determination but also the support of his community, including Harristown State High School and Hawk Academy.
His goal is clear: to become one of the best referees in the world.
From surviving conflict to chasing excellence on the football field, Sulaiman Zandinan is proof that even the most difficult beginnings can lead to extraordinary futures.
