Understanding the Yazidi Community and History

The Yazidis are an ethno-religious community with ancient roots in the Middle East, primarily originating from the Sinjar region of Iraq. Their religion, Yazidism, is one of the world’s oldest monotheistic faiths and includes unique spiritual traditions, prayers, and cultural practices passed down through generations.

For centuries, Yazidis have faced persecution and displacement because of their religious identity. In August 2014, the Yazidi Genocide resulted in mass killings, forced displacement, and the enslavement of thousands of Yazidi women and children. The tragedy drew international attention and led to global humanitarian and justice efforts.

Today, Yazidi communities live across the world, including in Australia, where families continue to rebuild their lives while preserving their language, traditions, and cultural heritage. The Yazidi people remain committed to remembrance, resilience, and the pursuit of peace and justice for future generations.
