Petition for Yazidi Ethnicity Recognition in the 2026 Australian Census Presented to Parliament

The petition advocating for the official recognition of Yazidi ethnicity in the 2026 Australian Census has been successfully presented to the House of Representatives. This marks a significant step forward in the Yazidi community’s ongoing efforts to ensure their identity is accurately acknowledged in national records.


Principal petitioner Mr. Sami Sheebo expressed gratitude to Susan Templeman MP, Chair of the Standing Committee on Petitions, for overseeing the processing of Petition EN6775. The petition now awaits a formal response from the Department of Treasury, under the supervision of Treasurer Hon. Jim Chalmers MP.

Recognition in the census is a crucial step in securing better representation, access to services, and policy support for the Yazidi community in Australia. The community now eagerly awaits the government’s response, hoping for a positive outcome that affirms their distinct cultural and ethnic identity.
