Between the Past and the Present: Rosita’s Journey of Survival and Strength

Rosita Haji Bajo was only eight years old when her life was shattered by the 2014 Yazidi genocide in Sinjar. Like thousands of Yazidi children, she was torn from her family and forced into a nightmare that would last for eight long years under ISIS captivity.

During the genocide, Rosita lost both of her parents. Her father was murdered by ISIS, while her mother died in captivity after enduring immense suffering and hardship. Separated from her family and homeland, Rosita was taken to Syria, where she faced exploitation, abuse, and the loss of her childhood. She was forced into marriage while still a child and spent years living under a false identity, hidden within the notorious Al-Hol camp.

Despite the unimaginable trauma she endured, Rosita never lost hope. In June 2022, after eight years of captivity, she finally regained her freedom and was reunited with her community. Her return marked the beginning of a new chapter—one focused on healing, rebuilding, and reclaiming the future that had been stolen from her.

Today, Rosita’s story stands as a powerful testament to resilience, courage, and survival. The contrast between her past and present reflects not only her personal strength but also the determination of the Yazidi people to overcome one of the darkest chapters in modern history.
